Daniel van Gansberghe

It is with great sadness that we announce the demise of Daniel van Gansberghe, one of ELPA’s founding members. Together with his wife Muriel Colinet, he founded the Carrefour HĂ©patites-Aide et Contact (CHAC) to help other patients in Belgium. Daniel was also present from the very first moment when the idea of a European Liver Patients Association was born. He actively supported his wife Muriel when she was president of ELPA from 2005 to 2006.

Daniel won his battle against hepatitis C, but lost his fight against liver cancer. He already had cirrhosis when he cleared his hepatitis C virus. The threat of cancer was always present. In early 2009, his worst fear became true when he was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. He battled with several chemotherapies. When he finally received a liver transplant in late October, we all hoped that he had won this fight, too. It came as a shock for all of us when Daniel passed away in the morning of 18th November.

We will always remember Daniel as a man from ELPA’s first hour, who always spoke from his heart. In spite of his illness, he fought for other liver patients and helped to create, and shape, the European Liver Patients Association.

Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time. May Daniel rest in peace, wherever he is now.
